Route description
Our Road Cycling Area is up-to-date for 2020 season.
New climbs, back roads and shortcuts around Lake Maggiore, Lake Lugano, Lake Como, Varese.
Road Cycling Area is nestled between the Alps to the North and the flat lands of the Po Valley to the South, among Lombardy (Italy), Piedmont (Italy) and Canton of Ticino (Italian speaking part of Switzerland).
With breathtaking panoramas, switchbacks, back roads, and mountain passes, ancient villages, and villas on each lake, each spot is full of history and tradition. Lake Maggiore, Lake Lugano, Lake Como and their mountains are natural and physical borders between Italy and Switzerland.
There's so much diversity environmentally and culturally within this small area.

There are so many nice routes and so much variety that you could stay here for several weeks without boring during your cycling holiday.
The lake roads are flat and there are many roads up in the mountains for climbing.
Riding on the lake shore, under the shadow of wooded hill or on the top of steep mountains. Every day you can discover new routes.

Road cycling climbs around the Lakes

The most equipped, enjoyable and flexible road cycling routes in Italy for your cycling holiday (1,600 km Ė 1,000 mi). This is a flexible area offering you the opportunity to ride through back roads, to extend or shorten the rides depending on your fitness level.

One thing that can always strike you is its variety. While the Alps remain a playground for pure climbers and the mountain goats, the beauty of Northern Italian Lakes, for riders of all levels, is its accessibility: there are few climbs here that will prove too difficult for the average rider.
You can ride through terrain so rarely visited by the cycling masses. The roads following the lakes can get a little busy in the height of summer but there are many easy to access climbs that take you away from the shoreline and offer nice views.

Itís like one big playground here, even after living here for a few years thereís always a new road to be explored.
Itís virtually impossible to do a 100 km ride on back roads with less than 1,500 metres climbing. Mix all those factors together and itís a great place to train.

Mostly you can feel safe on the roads here because local drivers are used to seeing many cyclists and they are friendly and patient. However if you ride together as a group you had better in a row, NOT side by side. The drivers can become angry.
A good number of pro road cyclists have made their home here, lured by the mild weather, the foothills of the Swiss-Italian Alps and the rolling roads down to the lakes. Vincenzo Nibali, Fabio Aru, Cadel Evans, Oscar Freire, Michael Rogers, Simon Clark, the team Mitchelton-Scott.

The three most important lakes are, from west to east, Lake Maggiore, Lake Lugano, Lake Como.
Lake Maggiore, Italyís second-largest lake. Lake Como and Lake Lugano are smaller.
Between and around these are several minor lakes - such as Lake Orta, west of Maggiore, and Lake Varese, midway between Lake Maggiore and Lake Lugano, as well as Lake Comabbio, Lake Monate, Lake Ganna,Lake Ghirla, Lake Brinzio.
Ten lakes of different sizes surround Varese.
The southern end of area is relatively flat ( approx 300 metres .a.s.l. Ė 990 feet .a.s.l.) and more peopled, but the northern end is mountainous (approx 1.000 metres a.s.l. - 3,280 feet a.s.l.) as the lakes reach the foothills of the Alps in Switzerland.
The region offers classic images of Italy: balconies over blue water, sleepy cobblestone villages and stone cottages, secluded gardens and exotic flora.
