07/04/2014 - The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) European Training Centre (ETC) for Australian athletes in Gavirate on the shores of Lake Varese

In northern Italy there is a small pocket of Australia that dozens of Aussies call home. The quiet region of Varese houses the AIS European Training Center, the U23 and women's team base, and the Orica-GreenEDGE service course.

The ETC offers accomodation, sport science and sport medicine capabilities with access the best facilities in region for Australian elite athletes training or competing in Europe.

A “Home away from home “ for Australian sport.
As a part of Australia’s national lead high performance sport agency, the ETC is helping to deliver Australia’s international sporting success.
The ETC is located in the town of Gavirate on the shores of Lake Varese. The center provide support to a range of sport including: rowing, canoeing, kayaking, cycling, football, volleyball, swimming, triathlon, rugby, athletics, tennis and sailing.

The Province of Varese was chosen for its:
- good climatic conditions,
- its proximity to international Milan Malpensa Airport (40 km – 25 miles far from Gavirate),
- quiet roads for training and travel to training facilities,
- good access to a range of competition venues and training facilities.

The ETC aims to replicate the world-class facilities and training environment of AIS site in Canberra, by providing the best possible staff.
This facility provides athletes with a base within close proximity to world-class competition and will provide services to assist all elite Australian athletes training or competing in Europe.
This will enhance Australia's ability to maintain its competitive advantage when training or competing overseas.
