Trophy Binda - UCI Women's WorldTour
Upcoming cycle event in Northern Italy’s Lake District

Trophy Alfredo Binda – Comune di Cittiglio is a women's professional road bicycle racing event held annually in March near Varese between Lake Maggiore and the foothills of Regional Park of Monte Campo dei Fiori. Trophy Alfredo Binda serves as the 2nd race of the UCI Women's WorldTour. The 2016 scheduled date is on 20th March 2016.

This one-day road race takes place in Northern Italy’s Lake District.

The departure place changes every year, however the arrival village is always Cittiglio, hometown of Alfredo Binda.
The field of riders completes a 18 km – 11 mi circuit several times to determine the winner. The final circuit traces Cittiglio, Brenta,Casalzuigno, Cuveglio, Cuvio, Orino (KOM), Azzio, Gemonio before returning to Cittiglio where the conclusion of the circuit is located.

The race consists of three climbs: Grantola climb ( 4 km – 2.5 mi - average 5%), Casalsuigno climb (1 km – 0.6 mi - average 6%) and Cuveglio/Orino climb (3 km - 1.8 mi – average 6%).
The first one lies on first part of the race, while the second one and the third one lie on final circuit. The Cuveglio/Orino climb typically separates the field of the riders as it is located just before the conclusion of the circuit.

Who’s Alfredo Binda ?

Alfredo Binda (Born at Cittiglio in 1902 – Died at Cittiglio in 1986) was an Italian cyclist of the 1920s and 1930s. When he was a child he moved to France (Nizza).
Binda was a keen cyclist in his youth and used to ride on the track. He was good on the track, but better in the mountains. He was a born climber.

Binda was the first cyclist to win the Giro d’Italia five times (1925, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1933) and the first cyclist to win the World Championship Road Race three times (1927, 1930, 1932).
Binda was the first rider to win the Giro d'Italia, World Championship Road Race and National Road Race Championship in one year. He did this in 1927.
In addition he won Milan–San Remo twice (1929, 1931), the National Road Race Championship four times, (1926, 1927, 1928, 1929) and the Tour of Lombardy four times (1925, 1926, 1927, 1931).
Later he managed the Italian National team. Under him, Fausto Coppi, Gino Bartali and Gastone Nencini all triumphed at the Tour de France.
